A 32-year-old Man Adjourns Best Farmer For 2020 In Ketu South

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ketu South Municipal Assembly in the Volta Region, Mr. Elliot Edem Agbenorwu, has invited prospective investors to invest in the cassava and coconut plantations in the district to help feed the Cassava and Coconut Processing Factories for Ketu South Municipality under the government’s One District One Factory (1D1F) initiative.

According to Mr Agbenorwu, the two major factories for the processing of coconut and cassava situated at Gbedzekope in the Akame Electoral Area once operational will create direct and indirect employment for over 600 youth.

This, the MCE disclosed, will have the tendency to generally address the issue of unemployment and reduced rural- urban migration in the country.

The MCE made the call when was speaking to the participants at this year’s farmers day celebrated by the Ketu South Municipal Assembly.

A 32-year-old man from Klikor community, Mr Torgbey Anokye has been adjourned the best farmer for the year 2020 in the Ketu South Municipality.

Mr Anokye who has been a seasoned farmer in Klikor producing crops comprising maize- 55acres, cassava- 5ac,mango-5ac, coconut-15 and
livestock made up of cattle-210, poultry-200, sheep-40,goat- 30,guinea fowl-300, duck-30 and crocodile-30

In all, the Assembly in its part of this year’s farmers day celebration has awarded seventeen (17) farmers who made sigfinicant contributions to the food busket in the district.

This year’s National Farmer’s Day celebration is on the theme “Enhancing Small Scale Agriculture towards Agribusiness Development”.

The MCE commended farmers for their hard work that ensured that Ghana did not run out of food amid the world deadly coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and emphasized that he was glad about the hard work of farmers in the district.

He stated that hundreds of farmers have benefited from the Planting for Food and Jobs and the Planting for Export and Rural Development programme initiated by the current government.

He said that the government was particular about the development of agriculture in the country and that is evident in the flagship programs; Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development and policies that have been rolled out to support agriculture.

He said efforts were being made to make agriculture more attractive to the youth, and that the youth are engaged to grow trees and vegetables as corporate social responsibilities.

He stated that army worms were “solidly” under control, and again called on investors to “partner hardworking farmers exploit the numerous opportunities in the district. ”.
The MCE also called on investors to consider the district’s cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry rearing industries, saying there was the need to maximise their production to meet market demand.

He said the district was endowed with adequate water resources for irrigated agriculture, notably all year round production of rice and vegetables to feed both local and international markets.

He also said its vast coastline with significant number of fish landing sites produced the bulk of the nation’s aquatic produce.

Mr Agbenorwu added that it was his utmost priority to ensure that the people in the community improved their livelihood through the creation of jobs instead of indulging in social vices such as the illegal felling of trees, alcoholism, and teenage pregnancy among others.

He indicated that New Patriotic Party (NPP) in its 2016 electioneering campaign among other things, promised 1D1F nationwide in a bid to industrialize the country.

“There’s no need to worry at all. Very soon, you’ll hear the sound of a factory and I have to say that this factory will not be like the others we hear of at some parts of the country where the raw materials to feed those factories become problematic,” he said.

Mr Agbenorwu said the cassava processing factory is expected to produce Ethanol as its main product aside Starch, Gari, and other bye products, will provide jobs for a good number of residents and help in reducing graduate unemployment.

He said the project was a manifestation of the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises to the people and hoped Ketu South would do the right thing by retaining the NPP in power.

“This is not the green book or the bluebook by any political party telling us that they have done this and yet you cannot see the real thing on the ground. This is the real thing and the people are happy that the President is fulfilling his promises and the people are promising the President that they will retain him and vote for the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, so the game can change,” he stressed.

The MCE stated that it was time eligible voters in Ketu South voted for an NPP Member of Parliament (MP) Mr. David Tiahno Quarshie for unprecedented development in the area, saying, even with just one MCE, a lot of development projects had taken place, which could equal those done when the area had a Minister, an MP and an MCE in the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

Mr Agbenorwu added that the municipality had far benefited from government’s flagship programmes such as Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ), Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP), Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD), Free SHS, One Constituency One Million Dollar (1C1MD) and the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO).

He mentioned that 5,000 coconut seedlings had been allocated to the Klikor, Aflao and Somey Traditional areas, all in the municipality, to be planted to generate income and to help boost PERD.

Grassroots participation

Mr Agbenorwu indicated that because the assembly had placed an importance to grassroot participation in sustainable development, it had committed resources to strengthen the sub-structures to perform efficiently and effectively.

That, he said, was because the assembly was implementing for sustainable development through a broader and effective consensus building with the public.

According to him, 3,325 people have benefited from the LEAP programme compared to last year’s number of 850 people.

He said, 5,000 farmers who had registered for the Planting for Food and Jobs programme were benefiting from subsidised fertiliser, about 150 women have benefited from the MASLOC funds to assist them enhance their livelihood while over 3,000 women had been recruited to work under the school feeding programme.

Business centre

The assembly, he added, would set up a business incubation centre where the youth would be encouraged to develop ideas and they would be assisted and trained in various field of vocational work.

Mr Agbenorwu called on stakeholders to rally behind the assembly to make use of the available resources to drive the municipality towards its vision to be an enviable decentralised assembly.

He disclosed that government had released GH¢5 billion to be distributed to the constituencies under the One Constituency One Million Dollar policy.

Ssecurity and Crime

Mr. Agbenorwu started that the municipality has obtained a Police divisional command in which the office is currently under construction and phase 2 will be commencing soon to reduce the crime rates in the municipality.

He further added that ,the assembly in hand with the Police comma d in the municipality has 1.62 % reduction so far.

Salt Mining

Mr said the municipality has a great minning prospect and very soon a new minng factory will be established .

He cited that about 150,000 acres of land is needed to start salt mining in the municipality which will be a base for other raw materials as well.

Klikor which serves as a base for clay in ceramic and tile production ,the MCE said Mineral Commission of Ghana has sent people to come over to do feasibility study on the clay before the factory is set up.

Agricultue

Speaking on agriculture sector, he cited about 5000 farmers have registered with the assembly to be benefiting from government’s fetilizer subsidies.

He further elaborated that about 10, 000 coconut seedings has been distributed to farmers in the municipality for oil extraction processing factory to be set up and the assembly will be allocating 100 coconut seedings to all the traditional areas in the municipality.

Children, Women and Welfare

He disclosed that 45 communities have been registered under the programme in which 3125 people are benefiting from and people with disabilities are been quipped with economic upliftment strategies by supporting them with machines, and other accessories, others are into mobile money businesses which has increased to 3% said by the MCE.

Sea Defence project

The sea defence extension project at Blekusu will commenced soon .
He said that the project was 4.2% started by the Mahama government and but it hasn’t completed .

Education

According to Mr Agbenorwu a number of schools in the municipality do not have enough classroom blocks but currently there are a number of classroom blocks under construction within the period under review.

Some have been completed while others are at various stages of completion.

The classroom blocks under constructions in the municipality includes 3- unit classroom block at Aveyiborme,3-unit classroom block at Glitame,2- unit classroom block for Early childhood center block at Lotakor ,,3- unit classroom block at Denu St Paul senior high School,6- unit classroom block at Three town senior high school, 6-unit classroom block at Dogbekope, 3- unit classroom block at Amedzikope, Extension of domentory at SOSEC- Agbozume,corn Mill machine for the same school.

Hhealth

Under health, the assembly received support from the donar partners and other NGOs to construct CHIP compounds with nurses quarters at Glitame,CHIP compound at Agbozume,CHIP compound with nurses quarters at Lotakor

With the help of and support from the MP electricity is being extended to all parts of the municipality to help farmers and other businesses to expand.

The MCE addressing the issue on rural electrification projects, the assembly has acquired 400 pieces of street light in which 200 has been distributed to all assembly members in the Municipality.

He assured the assembly commitment to ensure strict compliance with laws restricting buildings on watercourses and also to deal with the incessant indiscipline of motorbike users in the municipality.
