Promote and protect welfare of vulnerable-CSO urges Ghanaians 

The non-governmental organization,
Basic Heeds Ghana has stressed the need of promoting and protecting the welfare of the vulnerable in the country.

The organization noted that
has identified issue of stigmatisation as a major cause of mental health patients not willing to accept their health condition.

According to the Basic Heeds Ghana,
often times the patients that accepting their condition will rather make people look down on them by the general public.

Basic needs Ghana expressed grave worry to the phenomenon where patients are looked at in a direction of such which discouraged them from accepting their health status as mental health patients.

According to Executive Director for Basic Needs Ghana, Mr Peter Badimark Yaro, the incessant stigmatisation associated with the illness must be nib to the back to ensure that the country develop along with the vulnerable.

Speaking at a three day summit organized by the Ministry for Gender Children Protection on the theme: “Promoting and protecting the welfare of the vulnerable, Mr Peter Badimak Yaro challenged cooperate Ghana to educate the general public to desist from the attitude of stigma, saying that such action will mar the smooth progress of the country.

He charged state actors and the media to also play their role with the education of the Ghanaianm so as to become aware of the dangers of stigma.

“The media and other state actors must also help with the education of the public with the introduction of programmes on need to avoid stigma,as well as the introduction of publications to schools to help with the education of school pupils respectively,” Mr Yaro said.

For his part, Director of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr.Hafisah Zakaria noted that the government is putting in more measures to ensure that institutions charged to do their work on the vulnerable to attain the Millennium Development goal on the welfare of the vulnerable are done saying all hands must be on deck to ensure it becomes a reality.

Studies show that the issue of stigma by the general public is making it difficult for mental health patients to accept their I’ll health status thereby worsening the trends.

It is estimated that out of thirty million population(30 million),fourty one(41%) percent of them are challenged with mental health situation making the situation grim.There is the need to ensure that the speedy education of the public to join in to reduce the menace.
